Ajay Sharma, the founder of Sewa Welfare Society, has introduced check dams made using gunny bags, in the Khunti district of Jharkhand. The idea was conceived by him in 2018, and now has solved the water crisis, brought better yield to the farmers, and doubled their income. In this, farmers have arrested water in small streams, canals, and rivulets resulting in two crop harvests a year and resulting in more profit. So far, the check dams built under this initiative have benefitted about 8k farmers across 70 villages of the district. The concept was truly a game-changer for the rural economy with enormous benefits. It has even increased the water table of the region and brought social harmony in the region.
