Sir JC Bose, also known as the father of Bengali science fiction, invented the crescograph, a device for measuring the growth of the plant was born on 30th November 1858 in Munshiganj district, Bangladesh. He was a famous Biologist, Physicist, Botanist, and also an early writer of science fiction. He pioneered the investigation of radio and microwave optics. IEEE named him one of the Fathers of Radio Sciences.

AWARDS

He was awarded for so many of his works that it is not possible to mention all of them. But some of them are:

-THE COMPANION OF THE ORDER OF THE INDIAN EMPIRE (CIE) IN 1903

-COMPANION OF THE ORDER OF THE STAR OF INDIA (CSI) IN 1911.

-KNIGHT BACHELOR IN 1917

A crater on the moon has been named in his honor.

EDUCATION

He pursued...

● BA from St. Xavier's college, Calcutta.

● BA from Christ college, Cambridge.

● B.Sc and D.Sc from the University of London, England

Initially, he went to the University of London to study medicine, but couldn't pursue studies in medicine because of health problems. Instead, he conducted his research with the Nobel Laureate Lord Rayleigh at Cambridge and returned to India. His academic advisor was John Strutt Rayleigh.

RESEARCH

He founded Bose institute, a premier research institute of India and also one of its oldest. He is best remembered for his work on remote wireless signaling. Many believe that he is the original inventor of the wireless, but because he didn't believe in patenting his research, an Italian Inventor Guglielmo Marconi is credited with the invention of the wireless radio. After obtaining his early education in Kolkata, Bose went to Christ’s College, Cambridge, where his bust adorns the college’s courtyard even today. After returning to India and working in Kolkata, where he even taught at the Presidency College, Bose shifted base to Giridih where he breathed his last on 23 November 1937 at the age of 79. His residence in Barganda has been turned into a Science Centre, which is almost defunct now. On the scientist's death anniversary last year Praveen Kaswan, an Indian Forest Officer had shared pictures of Bose and wrote about his accomplishments. He had tweeted, “On May 10, 1901, at the jam-packed hall of Royal Society, London he demonstrated how plants have a life with the crescograph. He invented the telegram. The proved eastern mind was indeed capable of scientific achievements. Remembering J.C. Bose, the first modern scientist of India on his death anniversary.”

On March 3, the first budget of Hemant Soren led the Jharkhand government to make it clear that

education one of its prime objectives. “Education is among the top priorities of JMM government, we believe our proposal to open a university in the name of Sir J.C. Bose will be accepted. Yes, a university in the name of Bose will be a reality soon,”

Bose was a great teacher and researcher too. Some of his famous students who influenced the scientific world both in the pre and post-independence era are – Prof S.N. Bose, Prof. Meghnath Saha, Prof. Prasad Chandra, Prof. S K Mitra, Prof. Mahalanobis, and Prof. D.M. Basu.

BOSE AND GIRIDIH

Giridih currently has only one place named after the genius – Sir JC Bose Girl High School, which is adjacent to his residence. If the government accepts the proposal it will be the second university named after Bose in the country. The Haryana government has established a JC Bose Science and Technology University in 1969 in Faridabad. Till the 1970s, Giridih has been the place of work for many Bengali legends including Rabindra Nath Tagore, Sir JC Bose, PC Mahalonabis, Satyajit Ray, Aruna Asaf Ali among others. Along with the university, the JMM Giridih unit has also asked for a medical college to be built in the district.

KOSH- Knowledge and Open Source Help (KOSH) is an initiative by Giridih District Administration. It is an open library and a learning center which is managed by the xlr8rs - Your Own TechBasta team. We manage the smooth running, day to day learning activities, and student engagement. This program has been benefitting the number of students by providing resources and training and ensuring a fun learning atmosphere in the district.

INTERESTING FACTS

1. Jagadish ChandraBose had invented the wireless telegraphy and had also held a demonstration in 1895 but he did not file for a patent. Italian scientist Guglielmo Marconi on the other hand had made a similar demonstration in 1897, two years after Bose’s demonstration but Marconi filed for a patent in 1896. So, though Bose had done pioneering work in the field, Marconi got the credit for the invention.

2. Sir Nevill Mott, who won the Nobel Prize in 1977, said Bose was about 60 years ahead of his time and had rightly predicted the use of N-type and P-type semiconductors in the future.

3. Bose’s advanced equipment is preserved by The Bose Institute in Kolkata. A multi-beam receptor developed on his work was used in the NRAO 12 Metre Telescope located in Arizona, The USA.

4. Even though Bose had originally planned to study medicine, he could not endure the smell of the dissection rooms and fell ill. So he decided to opt for the study of natural sciences.
