The 2021 JEE Mains & Advanced

Annually lakhs of aspirants apply for JEE Mains and Advanced in hopes of getting admission in one of the best engineering institutions of India on the undergraduate level. Therefore, it is an absolute necessity for the aspirants to understand the examination itself before starting to prepare for it. In this post, we’ll be covering an introduction of the two examinations, their mode, eligibility criteria, reservations, schedule, and admissions.


WHAT IS JEE?

JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) is a regulated assessment conducted yearly by NTA (National Testing Agency). It constitutes of two different exams, JEE Main and JEE Advanced. They are conducted across different states in India for admission to the best engineering and technical institutions at the undergraduate level, whether Government funded or privately owned.


 

THE JEE MAIN



The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) comprises two papers.

  • The Paper1 is conducted for admission to Undergraduate Engineering Programs (B.E/B. Tech) at NITs, IIITs, other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs), Institutions/Universities funded/recognized by participating State Governments, as well as an eligibility test for JEE (Advanced), which is conducted for admission to IITs.

  • Paper 2 is conducted for admission to B. Arch and B. Planning courses in the Country.


SCHEDULE:

The JEE Main (2021) will be conducted in multiple sessions for admissions in the coming academic session.

  • Paper 1 of JEE (Main) 2021 will be held in February 2021 followed by the next three sessions in March, April, and May 2021.

  • Paper 2A & Paper 2B (B. Arch & B. Planning) will be held only twice a year, in February & May 2021

MODE OF EXAM:

JEE (Main)-2021 will be conducted in the following modes:

  • Paper 1 (B.E. /B. Tech.) in “Computer Based Test (CBT)” mode only.

  • Paper 2A (B. Arch): Mathematics (Part-I) and Aptitude Test (Part-II) in “Computer Based Test (CBT)” mode only and Drawing Test (Part-III) in pen & paper (offline) mode, to be attempted on drawing sheet of A4 size.

  • Paper 2B (B. Planning): Mathematics (Part-I), Aptitude Test (Part-II) and Planning Based Questions (Part-III) in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode only.


ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

  • Candidates who are appearing in class 12 or equivalent qualifying exam in 2021 or passed in 2019 or 2020 can apply for JEE Main 2021.

  • Candidates must not have participated in the JEE Main for more than 3 consecutive years.

  • Candidates must be a Citizen of India. Non-Residential Indian (NRI) or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) or Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) candidates can also apply for JEE Main 2021, providing the necessary category certificates.

  • Candidates should get at least 75% marks in class XII examination for admission in NITs, IIITs, and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) or they should rank in the top 20 percentile of their qualifying exams to get admission in other state government institutions.

  • For Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe candidates, 65% marks are required in Class XII.


RESERVATIONS:

In the case of Institutes run by the Central Government, the reservation would be applicable as mentioned below:

  • 15% of the seats Scheduled Castes (SC) for candidates

  • 7.5% seats for Scheduled Tribes (ST) for candidates

  • 27% seats for OBC-NCL candidates

  • 10% of the seats for General-EWS candidates

  • Persons with Disability (PwD) with 40% or more disability


ADMISSIONS:

Admission to B.E. / B. Tech / B. Arch / B. Planning. Courses in NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs participating though Central Seat Allocation Board is based on All India Rank (AIR), subject to the condition that the candidate should have secured at least 75% marks in the 12th class examination or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th class / Qualifying examination conducted by the respective Boards. For SC/ST candidates the qualifying 12th marks would be 65% in the class/qualifying examination.


Admission to B.Arch. course in institutions other than NITs, IIITs, CFTIs is done by the Council of Architecture. B.Arch. and B. planning candidates must have passed the qualifying examination with 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.


SEAT ALLOCATION PROCESS:

Candidates are offered admission based on their choices and AIRs through a Seat Allocation Process done by CSAB/JoSAA. The authentication/verification of relevant documents in support of identification, date of birth, qualifying examination, state of eligibility, category, and disability (if any) of the qualifying candidates is done at the time of the Seat Allocation/ admission process. On failing to produce any of the authentic documents, the candidate is not considered for admission.

Gen-EWS, SC, ST, OBC, and PwD candidates are required to produce original certificates as per prescribed formats issued at the time of Seat Allocation. On failing to do so, they are not considered for admission.



 

THE JEE ADVANCED



Through JEE (Advanced), IITs offer admissions into undergraduate courses in Engineering, Sciences, and Architecture. The exam is conducted by the seven Zonal Coordinating (ZC) IITs under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board (JAB). The examination consists of two papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2) of three hours duration each. Both the papers are compulsory. The JAB is yet to announce the schedule of JEE Advanced 2021.


MODE OF EXAM:

The exam is conducted only in the Computer Based Test (CBT) mode. The total duration of each paper of the JEE (Advanced) 2021 examination is of 3 hours (180 minutes).


ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

  • Candidates should be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (including all categories) in B.E./B.Tech. Paper of JEE (Main) 2021.

  • The percentages of various categories of candidates to be shortlisted are: 10% for GEN-EWS, 27% for OBC-NCL, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST and the remaining 40.5% is OPEN for all. Within each of these five categories, a 5% horizontal reservation is available for PwD candidates.

  • Candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 1996. Five years of relaxation is given to SC, ST, and PwD candidates, i.e., these candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 1991.

  • A candidate can attempt JEE (Advanced) a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.

  • A candidate should have appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in either 2020 or 2021 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.

  • A candidate should NOT have been admitted to an IIT.

  • JAB has decided that eligible candidates who were not able to appear for JEE Advanced 2020 because of COVID-19 can appear in 2021.


RESERVATIONS:

The reservation would be applicable as mentioned below:

  • 10% of the seats for GEN-EWS candidates.

  • 27% of the seats for OBC-NCL candidates.

  • 15% of the seats for Scheduled Castes (SC) candidates.

  • 7.5% of the seats for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates.

  • 5% of the seats for PwD candidates in each of OPEN, GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, and ST category seats.

ADMISSIONS:

Admission is offered through centralized counseling and seat allotment process which is conducted by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). Seats will be allotted on the basis of rank in JEE Advanced 2021.


JOINT SEAT ALLOCATION:

  • Candidates who are eligible for admission take participate in the joint seat allocation process by filling in their preferential choices of the courses and institutes.

  • The schedule of the joint seat allocation is announced separately by JoSAA.

  • The list of courses that will be offered by the IITs for admission for the academic year 2020-21will be made available at the time of online filling-in of choices.
